Ukraine has harvested more than 2 million tons of grain, with some crops yielding higher than last year, but the gross harvest will decrease by 5-6 million tons of grain. There will be no acute problem with crop storage, as there was last year. The key issue is the ability to export agricultural products.
Denys Marchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Agri Council, spoke about this during a national telethon.
"The second sowing and harvesting campaign is taking place during full-scale invasion by the aggressor country Russia. Of course, in these conditions, we cannot talk about the indicators we had as of 2021. Currently, all Ukraine has started harvesting grain crops. To date, we have harvested more than 2 million tons of grain, which is a good start. For some crops, the yields will be better than last year’s, but in general, the harvest in 2023 will be significantly lower compared to 2022, by about 5-6 million tons. Let me remind you that in 2022 we managed to harvest more than 70 million tons of grains and oilseeds, in 2023 the harvest will be in the range of 66-68 million tons," said Denys Marchuk.
The issue of exporting Ukrainian agricultural products remains acute.
"The harvest will be enough to ensure food security in the country and fulfill the export potential. We need 18 million tons for domestic needs, and the rest of them will be exported. The issue of grain storage will not be as acute as it was last year’s. Given the decrease in the gross harvest, we’ve got enough storage capacity. The key issue remains the sale of agricultural products, which requires safe move of ships in the Black Sea and the development of the Solidarity Roads through the EU," added the UAC Deputy Chairman.
