Last week rains helped with the winter crops situation, but not around the regions. Agrarians mention that because of humidity shortage (in the period of sowing time and during vegetation), crops in some regions will be lower.
Rains didn’t save the situation in Odesa region, which suffered the most from humidity shortage. Two weeks ago agrarians told us about 70% winter crops which were lost in the southern part of the region: wheat, barley, rape. Rains could save only 11%-12% of winter crops. The Chairman of AE “Stoianova A.A.” from Ismail district, Odesa region, Alla Stoianova tells us that these areas are lost too.
“There was a hailstorm and freezing rain. But there was no rain in the fields. Yesterday we did a new statement about crop losses. As a result, we have only 110 hectares of rape now (a total area was about 2,8 thousand hectares). Talking about spring crops, we sowed part of sunflower and corn seeds, but from the middle of April we couldn’t work in the field: soil is too dry. Very large territory was out of crops.” – Alla Stoianova told us.
Agrarian enterprises from other southern regions feel humidity shortage too. The same situation is in the east of Ukraine. UAC representative, the chairman of AE “Satsenko” Vitalii Satsenko (from Kherson region, Skadovsk district), says that situation with grain crops is hard. Crops begin to ear, but without humidity ears will be empty. Rains in this territory are irregular. If it doesn’t rain the crops can be lost.
The chairman of LLC “Nyva” (Donetsk region) Pavlo Takhtarov tells us that only 300 hectares from 1000 have satisfactory conditions. They had to sow sunflower into dry soil, that is why they need rains so much. A lot of corps can be lost without water.
Very difficult situation is in Mykolaiv region:
“Our enterprise has got fields in Kyiv, Zhytomyr and Mykolaiv regions. Everything is good in the north, we didn’t sow winter crops there. Talking about Mykolaiv region – situation is bad. Rain, that we had before, was good for crops’ surviving. But, because of humidity shortage after winter, such crops lag in vegetation.” – the Chairman of PE “Makariv-Agrobud” Ihor Chumak mentions.
Also, the western regions suffer from hoarfrost: it had very bad influence into the winter crops, which had already suffered from humidity shortage. Rape and wheat had already lost a lot of burgeons. It’s going to lead to reduction in the yields. The LLC “Feliks-Agro” (Volyn region) Chairman Pavlo Davydiuk mentions that because of such weather conditions, enterprise’s crops going to be 20-25% lower. Some enterprises from Ivano-Frankivsk region are obliged to resow sunflower, corn and soybean seeds.
“Situations are almost the same all around Ivano-Frankivsk region. We are obliged to resow from 10% to 15% of sunflower, corn and soybean seeds.” – the AE “Vilkhivtsi” chairman Ivan Pryimak says.
UAC emphasizes mention that the government have to make compensation for crop losses, which farmers had because of bad weather conditions. This can be done by reviewing the amounts and directions of state aid allocated to farmers in 2020, and to direct some of them for payments to those whose crops were lost.
