"Currently, the EU produces 3.6 billion m3 of biomethane per year, Ukraine can increase this volume by 1 billion m3 by 2030. The total potential of biomethane production in Ukraine is estimated at 9.7 billion m3/year, of which the agro-industrial complex can produce 7.8 billion m3/year.
In the overall structure of biomethane production in the EU, the agro-industry provides 38%. This figure is made up of agricultural residues, including manure, crop residues and consecutive crops.
In some countries this figure exceeds 80% - in France, and even 90% - in Denmark. 70% of the territory of our country is agricultural land, which means that we can become one of the leading countries in the production of biomethane", - the head of the Ukrainian Agri Counсil (UAC) and founder of the charity fund SAVEUA Andriy Dykun.
Calculation of the potential biomethane production by the agro-industrial complex of Ukraine (7.8 billion m3/year): The potential includes biomethane from waste and by-products of the agro-industrial complex - 3.8 billion m3, from corn silage - 2.7 billion m3, as well as from other livestock waste and processing industry - 1.3 billion m3.
According to experts, the total cost of commercial biomethane, taking into account the type of raw materials for biogas production, plant capacity and the cost of logistics to the ultimate consumer, can vary from 300 to 1200 euros/1000 m3. While the cost of natural gas at European hubs has reached at times 3400 euros/1000 m3.
The development of the biomethane market will contribute to the decarbonization of the gas sector and will reduce dependence on imports of fossil energy resources, but even more so - open exports to the European Union.
Of course, the development of the sector is affected by russia's military aggression in Ukraine, which has reduced the sector's growth opportunities. Despite all the difficulties, the Ukrainian government has prepared all the necessary legal framework, and 30 potential market players as of October have already requested technical conditions for connection to the gas network, including several agricultural holdings
