The UAC has launched a series of regional agricultural forums.
The first event took place in Cherkasy region — the center of Ukrainian agricultural production — with the support of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration.
The forum was attended by over 200 agricultural producers from all corners of the region, representatives of the authorities, and local communities. Participants discussed the main challenges facing the agricultural sector, ways to develop rural areas, and strengthen cooperation between business and government.
Ihor Taburets, Head of the Cherkasy Regional Military Administration, emphasized the important role of farmers in the stability of the region and the country:
"The agricultural sector of Cherkasy region is the foundation of our economic and patriotic mission. In the first six months of this year, the region's exports amounted to over USD730 million, 70% of which came from the agro-industrial complex. Thanks to your efforts, we can confidently say that we are fulfilling our economic mission," he said.
Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture Taras Vysotskyi reported on the latest changes in cooperation with the EU and areas of state support for farmers. He reminded that on October 29, new customs quotas will come into force within the framework of the updated trade agreement between Ukraine and the European Union.
“Our task is to protect farmers in the process of integration into the European market. By the end of November, Ukraine's negotiating position in the agricultural context regarding EU accession will be formed. At the end of October, public discussions with farmers are planned to take into account the position of business before consultations with the EU,” Taras Vysotskyi emphasized.
According to Andrii Dykun, the Ukrainian Agi Council Chairman, the losses to the agricultural sector after Ukraine's accession to the EU could amount to at least EUR2 billion per year.
"We have made our historic choice and have the political will to move towards the EU. But it is important that this process takes place on terms that are acceptable to farmers. We need a transition period, because a single law could ban more than 100 plant protection products, leading to losses of EUR70-90 per hectare. We must adapt, but at a reasonable pace and with a transition period," emphasized Andrii Dykun.
The forum in Cherkasy was the first in a series of regional meetings that the UAC will hold in different regions of Ukraine. Their goal is to discuss current challenges, hear the views of local farmers, and work with government officials to develop proposals to support and develop the industry.
