In Kherson region, farmers cannot go to the fields due to its mining. Large agricultural enterprises have not even started sowing. Small farmers often clear the fields for planting on their own, which has catastrophic consequences. This year, Ukraine will not receive any vegetables or grains from Kherson.
Igor Yosipenko the UAC participant and the head of an agricultural enterprise in Kherson region reported this on "Suspilne" TV.
"The situation is difficult and critical. Only in the right bank part of Kherson region, there is a small amount of land that is not heavily mined. Only in two communities, farmers have partially sown winter crops on very small plots, and currently, they are preparing land for sunflower planting. This is a narrow strip of fields bordering Dnipropetrovsk region," said Igor Yosipenko.
Currently, large agricultural enterprises are not going to the fields and not sowing at all. Small farmers, private households with 10-15 hectares of land, are trying at their own risk to clear the land of mines for planting. As a result, there have been many cases with catastrophic consequences, when people lost their lives. Sometimes, entering the field they can accidentally come across the mines.
Kherson region is an agrarian land, but currently, only socially significant objects are being demined.
"We have appealed to organizations that deal with demining. The prices are very high, starting from 10,000 hryvnias per hectare, depending on the number of mines. That is why farmers are doing this dangerous work themselves and planning to sow, but this is a small percentage. Others are waiting for demining. I cannot go to the fields and clean it," added Igor Yosipenko.
The absence of agricultural products from Kherson will not only affect Ukraine but also Europe.
"I want to remind you that Kherson had the largest vegetable market in Europe. Vegetables, watermelons, berries - all of these were grown specifically in the left-bank part of the region, which is now occupied. This year, we will not see any Kherson watermelons or vegetables. We may receive a small amount of sunflower and grains," said the farmer
