A full-scale war undermines not only the food security of Ukraine, but also of the entire world, because we feed approximately 400 million people. This was stated by the UAC Chairman Andriy Dykun during a speech at the Global Food Security Event, which took place within the framework of the UN General Assembly.
The UAC Chairman outlined short-term and long-term tasks for the Ukrainian agricultural sector.
Short-term tasks:
- Increase in export volumes
In March, we exported 0.3 million tons, and in August - 4.5 million tons. The largest volume through the ports was almost 3 million tons. For comparison, the volume of exports before the war was about 7 million tons per month.
- Reduction of agricultural products cost and increasing of purchase prices
Due to the impossibility of exporting volumes in the cost structure, storage price has increased. If the issue of storage and price is not resolved, farmers will not sow in spring, because it will not make sense. The price of solving this task is 4 billion dollars.
Long-term tasks:
- Restoration of the destroyed agricultural sector
Undoubtedly, the biggest losses were in front-line enterprises located in the occupied and de-occupied zones. Some are recovering, they just need support, but some require more of our involvement. That is why we created the SAVE UA charity fund. One of the main tasks of the fund is to ensure the food security of the country and feed the IDPs, there are currently about 10 million of them. This cannot be done if we do not help the farms to be recovered.
- Development of processing industry
Processing means additional funds for the economy and employment of the population. As you know, about 7 million people have left Ukraine. It will be possible to return them after the war only if there is a well-paid job in the country.
- Increase in the production of agricultural products per hectare
We have already started negotiations with the University of Iowa regarding the creation of an agricultural university that will help Ukrainian farmers to produce more products per hectare.
To solve the last two tasks, we need knowledge. We don't have much time for that. We are ready to start working quickly, because we are motivated, because the agricultural sector is very important for the economy of Ukraine.
