The bill "On the Water Users' Organizations", developed by UAC together with USAID Agricultural and Rural Development Program specialists - AGRO and People’s Deputy Oleksandr Kovalchuk, was supported by the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky.
During an extended meeting held at the National University of Water Management and Nature Management, the President called for the draft law to be submitted to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as soon as possible.
The implementation of the bill will be the first step for the restoration and development of irrigation system in Ukraine.
In particular:
- will facilitate the transfer of network and pumping stations to the WUA balance
- to reduce government spending
- to create conditions for the restoration and development of melioration
- will help to attract investment to the reconstruction and modernization of engineering infrastructure.
It will be recalled that the irrigation system in Ukraine needs to be restored immediately. At the beginning of independence, Ukraine had 2.1 million hectares of irrigated lands. Nowadays only 500 thousand hectares are irrigated.
In the context of climate change, the issue of irrigation is very acute. According to farmers in the south, if irrigation is not restored, agriculture in their region will disappear at all.
