It seems that the border blockers are using the issue of Ukrainian agricultural exports to try to get preferences from their governments. This issue was stated by Denys Marchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Agri Council, on the Kyiv TV channel, commenting on the blocking of borders by neighboring countries in the West.
According to him, the strikers thus get the opportunity to start negotiations with their own government to resolve their problems.
"We saw a similar situation in Poland. There, a dialogue between the government and farmers was established, and farmers and carriers in that country ended their rallies, but suddenly blocking the border in Romania has begun. They claimed that our agricultural products interfered with the work of their farmers. However, it is known that we do not export to Romania, but use it only as a transit zone. Ukraine's export capacity to Romania has increased, and it receives funds for using their infrastructure, which fills the local budgets. Therefore, there are no prerequisites for these strikes," explained Denys Marchuk.
According to Denys Marchuk the situation was similar with the protesters in Slovakia and Hungary.
"If we look at the demands of the Romanian protesters, we will see that there are few issues related to Ukrainian agricultural exports. They demand not to raise prices for fuel and machinery insurance, and call for no changes to the taxation system. Polish farmers have made similar demands. It is not known how long the protests on the Romanian border will continue. However, there had already been a dialog with them at the level of the Prime Minister of this country and the strike was not supposed to happen again," said the UAC Deputy Chairman.
Denys Marchuk believes that Russia may be behind the protests, as it is only Russia that benefits from disrupting the supply of Ukrainian products to foreign markets.
"It turns out that some 'third force' is supporting the protests that ended in one country and began in another one. Of course, the Russian’s side is interested in blocking logistics routes. The aggressor country understands that the agricultural sector fills the budget of Ukraine, which is used to finance the Armed Forces," said Denys Marchuk.
He added that the law enforcement agencies of Ukraine and Romania should find out in detail who is behind the border blockade.
