Ukraine's western borders are constantly blocked as a result of strikes by European farmers against the supply of Ukrainian agricultural products.
Denys Marchuk, the UAC Deputy Chairman, explained a number of factors why farmers in the EU were striking against Ukrainian grain.
"Farmers in the EU are on strike not only in Poland, which indicates problems in the agricultural sector in Europe. The eurozone is undergoing reforms, while Ukraine is integrating into Europe, which causes contradictions. First, the cost of crop production in the EU is higher due to the Green Deal requirements. European farmers are seeking compensation, and subsidies are being cut. Ukraine's European integration becomes more complicated in such conditions," said Denys Marchuk.
The dissatisfaction of European farmers is indirectly caused by the launch of the second stage of land reform in Ukraine, namely the permission to sell 10,000 hectares per person.
"We are already competing with the EU in terms of agricultural products, although we have small and medium-sized farms. The second stage of land reform has begun in Ukraine: from January 1, 2024, we have allowed the sale of 10,000 hectares per person. For Europeans this is incomprehensible, because no one sells such land masses there. By selling large areas of land, we are contributing to the creation of large agribusinesses that will enter the eurozone very intensively, and then this will also be a significant problem for Polish, Romanian, German and French farmers. That is why it is important to postpone the decision to increase the land borders for a few years after the war. This is necessary, first of all, to support small and medium agricultural enterprises in Ukraine. Many producers are at war, many are operating at a loss, and we are giving impetus to the formation of large latifundia by selling big amounts of land plots," added the UAC Deputy Chairman.
