After the end of the war, according to various estimates, the Ukrainian agricultural sector will need from two to five years to recover to pre-war levels, depending on the sub-sector.

Denis Marchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Agri Council (UAC), explained to Сomments.ua what losses the agricultural sector has already suffered and where investments should be directed as a matter of priority:

"If we talk about attracting investments, of course, we desperately need them, taking into account the war and its devastating consequences. The very promising agricultural industry of Ukraine is currently experiencing colossal losses. Direct losses amount to about 6.5 billion dollars, indirect losses - about 35 billion. Ukrainian animal husbandry has suffered significant damage. About 400,000 bee colonies, 95,000 goats and sheep, 212,000 cattle, 507,000 pigs and almost 11.7 million birds died. In total, farmers and beekeepers lost more than $360 million. In addition as a result of hostilities, more than 14.3 thousand hectares of perennial plantations worth almost 349 million dollars were destroyed."

Therefore, continues the expert, funds are needed to raise the industry. Due to him, after the end of the war, according to various calculations, we will need at best two or three years to return to pre-war level. More realistically, it will happen in five years.

"We definitely cannot do without investments here. We hope for them. There are relevant programs announced by the president and prime minister. There are industries that require investments, which I have mentioned above," Denys Marchuk notes.

According to him, it is now important to raise the de-occupied territories. People who live there have lost their business, financing from banks is actually unrealistic, because they have nothing to offer as collateral. That is why the UAC, the expert says, created an interactive map of the destruction of Ukraine.

"Enterprises show their losses, what is not working, what is missing," said Denys Marchuk. "Such information helps to collect data in order to claim certain financial compensations from the aggressor (reparations). In addition, it provides the necessary information to investors who are ready to invest in the agricultural sector. Invest in elevators, farms, etc."
