We continue to inform about the project on grain storage in polymer grain sleeves provided by the Ukrainian Agri Council (UAC) jointly with the USAID Agriculture Growing Rural Opportunities Activity (AGRO).
The service team for packing grain in polymer sleeves has started its work, but due to unfavorable weather conditions, the installation process is slower.
We would like to emphasize that in order for the grain to be saved in the sleeve for 18 months, it must have basic indicators (they are different for each crops). The lower the percentage of moisture in the grain, the longer it will be saved. But what to do when there are queues at the elevators for a couple of months due to the lack of electricity and there is no way to quickly dry the grain?
As Valeriy Alekseev (chief expert of grain packing of UAC) comments, wet grain can also be packed, but in this case the storage period will be reduced. For example, you can put grain in the sleeve, the humidity of which will be 6-10% higher than the requirements of DSTU, but it will be possible to store it for only 2-2.5 months. Grain with a moisture content higher than 2-5% can be stored for up to 5-6 months. In the cold season, the activity of mold fungi decreases, and the tightness of the sleeve "blocks" access to the fresh air necessary for their life. In practice, already after harvesting, farmers begin to unpack wet grain and gradually and systematically dry it, starting with the wettest. So that by the end of winter, unpack all grain with moisture more than 5%, and by the end of April, everything else that exceeds the basic indicators.
Our team is ready to provide professional support for saving grain in polymer sleeves.
