The initiative to introduce quotas on imports of mineral nitrogen fertilizers, presented by the Ministry of Economic Development, Trade and Agriculture, can make higher food prices for consumers. In particular, bakery and pasta products, cereals, vegetables and fruits, oil.

In the structure of agricultural production, fertilizers occupy an average of 30%. Farmers, experts, and Deputies have already mentioned that introduction of quotas on fertilizers import of will lead to a shortage in the market and, consequently, price increases. Farmers will include the higher cost of fertilizers in the cost of their products - wheat, sunflower, cereals - which will influence on the cost of food products.

"Such a situation is unfair for the farmers themselves, and for all of us - people who buy food every day in stores and markets. Moreover, farmers are categorically against quotas on fertilizer imports, because they understand the consequences of such actions. For almost a month, farmers have been trying to explain this to th Goverment through appeals, statements, protests on the roads, under the walls of the Cabinet of Ministers and the President's Office. The decision to impose quotas has not yet been made, but the President, the head of the Government and Deputies have already stated that such a step is unacceptable. We hope that this position will remain the same and quotas will not be introduced." - the Deputy Chairman of the All-Ukrainian Agrarian Council Denys Marchuk says.

It is worth reminding that, in the end of May we get to know that following results of investigation of the Interdepartmental International Trade Commission the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Agriculture had a plan to introduce quotas on mineral nitrogen fertilizers import from the trading partners of Ukraine - the EU, the Persian Gulf, North Africa, also, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Georgia, China, USA.

The leading agrarian associations criticized this intention sharply, as they see it as lobbying the interests of the Ukrainian fertilizer monopolist, the company group “OstChem”, which includes the main fertilizer factories, which are owned by oligarch Dmytro Firtash.
