The Ukrainian agricultural sector continues to demonstrate achievements that confirm its importance for the Ukrainian economy and international food stability. According to Denys Marchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Ukrainian Agri Council, the revenue from agricultural exports has increased significantly this marketing year, but the issue of labor booking remains a significant challenge.

In the first four months of the current marketing year, which began in July, Ukraine exported USD1.5 billion more in agricultural products than in the same period last year. The largest revenues were generated by exports of wheat, barley, corn, and sunflower oil.

“We have indicators that demonstrate that even in wartime, Ukraine remains a reliable food supplier. In October, despite the shelling of the port infrastructure, we exported over 6.5 million tons of grains and oilseeds. We have shown the world that we are able to fulfill our obligations,” said Denys Marchuk.

Against the backdrop of export success, farmers are facing difficulties related to labor shortages. The issue of reserving employees remains unresolved, and this could be critical for preparing for the spring sowing campaign.

“One of the key issues is reservation of employees from military deferment, there is a catastrophic shortage of people. Today, farmers have no clear rules on how to work in the new season. The uncertainty of the exemption process creates significant risks for the 2025 spring sowing campaign,” emphasized the UAC Deputy Chairman.

Ukraine also faces increased competition in the field of agricultural trade.

“The aggressor country uses its agricultural products as a tool of political influence, dumping prices for grain and sunflower oil, especially in countries that have traditionally bought Ukrainian products. Russia is our main competitor, trying to push Ukraine out of international markets. Price dumping attracts poor countries. Such actions allow Russians not only to sell more but also to receive political dividends,” emphasized Denys Marchuk.

Nowadays, solving the problems of reservation of employees from military deferment and strengthening positions in global markets are critical for the Ukrainian agricultural sector.
