Within the start of harvest campaign in Ukraine and the European Union, grain logistics may deteriorate if the issue of port unblocking is not resolved.
This statement was stated by the Ukrainian AgriCouncil (UAC) Chairman Andrii Dykun.
"A new harvest in Ukraine will be collected in 2-3 weeks, and last year's grain is stored in the grain storages. We are doing our best to increase storage capacity and exports. In March, Ukraine exported only 200,000 tons across the western border by railway and across the Danube river ports, and in May it exported 1.7 million tons. We have greatly increased our capabilities, but this is not 5 million tons of exports that passed through ports before the war. And the main question I want to ask other countries - why this problem has not been raised since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine? We, as a specialized association, immediately talked about global food security. Unfortunately, the whole world was silent. Even the relevant FAO association was silent for a long time, then voiced a neutral position. If the problem was discussed at the same level in March, unblocking Ukrainian ports would be a solution,” Andrii Dykun said.
According to him, the logistical collapse will be increased when the EU begins to harvest.
"I have already announced our export figures. However, as Europe begins to collect its own harvest, these figures will be reduced. The EU’s governments can simplify the procedure for crossing the border with Ukrainian grain, but they do not affect business there. And European business, first of all, will buy and transport its own grain after the harvest. Nowadays the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and the Railways of Ukraine are doing incredible things for export, they have achieved a lot. But, unfortunately, this is not enough. Ports are needed for full-fledged exports," Andrii Dykun added.
